At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
